EFFECT OF NEW ANTIBIOTIC, MOLINMYCETIN-B, ON MICROBIAL SYNTHESIS OF NUCLEIC ACIDS AND PROTEIN WITH STAPH, AUREUS AS TEST ORGANISM

Abstract
Incorporation studies with phosphorus-32 and sulfur-35 were carried out employing new antibiotic, molinmycetin-B obtained from Penicillium (2?8) sp. which was isolated from Korean soil, and Staph. aureues (penicillin resistant strain) was used as test organism. As reference substances, antibiotics such as chloramphenicol, streptomycin, penicillin and antimetabolite, 8-azaguanine were tested along with molinmycetin-B.
In the presence of molinmycetin-B, the incorporation of phosphorus-32 into nucleic acids and sulfur-35 into protein were inhibited to a great extent. Thus, the bacteriostatic activity, of-molinmycetin-B is postulated to depend upon it¢¥s interference with synthesis of bacterial nucleic acids and protein. Such inhibitory behavior is same as chioramphenicol which interferes also with synthesis of both nucleic acids and protein. In the presence of streptomycin, the synthesis of nucleic acids was inhibited, but no protein synthesis was affected. However, penicillin did not interfere with synthesis of both nucleic acids and protein of Staph. aureus (penicillin resistant strain). Purine analogue, 8-azaguanine inhibited only the synthesis of bacterial nucleic acids.
